Overview : The Snow Leopard Expedition to Ladakh
Ladakh, in the very north of India, is spectacular snow leopard habitat. Surrounded by some of the world’s greatest mountain ranges, this former Tibetan Buddhist Kingdom is the best place on Earth to see snow leopards.
This expedition is crafted to deliver an intimate feel for the culture and history of the region while searching for snow leopards. The major city of this region, Leh, was once an important hub for trade on the ancient Silk Road. Today, it is a melting pot of Central Asian and Himalayan cultures. Ethnic Ladakhis coexist with Tibetans, Uighurs, Baltis, and Kashmiris. Leh still remains a frontier town, isolated from the rest of India through bitter winters.
Our journey begins further south, in India’s capital New Delhi. After spending the first night in New Delhi, we’ll fly across the Great Himalayan Range. The day in Leh is an easy one. We must acclimatize to the altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level.
We’ll spend the second day visiting some of the major sights around Leh. These include medieval Tibetan monasteries and some key sights.
The real expedition begins on day three, when we transfer by road to our remote camp. The LUNGMĀR is an exclusive private property in prime snow leopard habitat.
We’ll use the LUNGMĀR as a base for the next 6 days. Each day, Voygr’s professional trackers will spread out through the valleys. They will scan the towering ridges around camp for snow leopards, blue sheep and more. Your expedition leader, Ismail Sharif, will tell you about the regions deep history, the varied wildlife, and about conservation challenges in the region. They will also be able to teach you photography and understanding snow leopard behavior.
The LUNGMĀR, our private camp, is the result of years of research and development. Though remote, it is eminently comfortable. It features custom-made centrally heated tents and warm and inviting suites with decor reminiscent of the Great Silk Road. A team of chefs keeps you well fed. The LUNGMĀR guarantees an excellent and warm experience. It is accessible by road and we have road access through much of the area we track snow leopards in. Guests do not have to hike into camp.
What’s Unique About The Snow Leopard Expedition To Ladakh?
You’ll have both local and international snow leopard experts on this trip. Besides famed photographer and conservationist, Ismail Shariff, other snow leopard specialists such as Abdul Rashid will be on hand to guide and educate guests about the region, the wildlife, and conservation work.
